| Planting Fall Bulbs = = = = = = = = = = = = = Dear Casual Gardener, It’s the end of bulb planting season and I’m planting bulbs like crazy right now – it’s wonderful to be out in the crisp weather with the leaves crunching underfoot. My favorite bulbs are Tulips, which I plant every year. What are your favorite bulbs? Signed, Tulip Tammy = = = = = = = = = = = = = Dear Tulip Tammy, Hands down my two favorite bulbs are Alliums and Daffodils – the toughies of the bulb world which could survive a nuclear holocaust and keep on smiling. While Tulips are beautiful, they are often only one year bulbs. As you know, Tammy, many Tulip aficionados need to replant Tulips yearly to see regular bloom. They demand full sun and exact planting conditions or they will soon die off. Both Alliums and Daffodils seem a more environmentally sustainable choice because if planted properly will bloom for years and years requiring little or no attention. They often reproduce too; building colony’s of gorgeous spring flowers. Another positive attribute to both Alliums and Daffodils is their animal-resistance. Chipmunks and Squirrels refuse to touch them in my garden; eating tulip bulbs instead. Both flowers are fantastic in the vase and it is also possible to dry Alliums. Although there are many varieties of Allium, ‘Globemaster’ is my favorite. My children often call the flower “Aliens” instead of “Alliums” because the flower is a giant round head at almost eight inches across. It stands close to three feet high and definitely resembles a little person standing in the spring flower bed. What a conversation piece! Try planting different varieties of Daffodil and Allium bulbs to extend their bloom season and enjoy the Indian Summer we are having! Keep planting those bulbs up until the ground freezes, then wait for their big show in the spring. Get Healthy! Get Green! Get Community! www.thecasualgardener.com |
