Fall Gardening

Dear Casual Gardener,

Fall is finally here and I’m wondering what I can do in my garden right now to help me stay active
and fit. Any ideas?

Dear Frank,

Fall is an important time in the garden. Have a family that is inside “plugged in” to the digital world? Pry their
little fingers off the keyboards and Nintendo’s; bring them out in nature to get some exercise in the crisp
weather for the big fall clean up. Ignore their complaints – once they get outside they will love it – and it is
important for their little souls to be out in nature experiencing the real world instead of the digital.

It’s true that being outdoors in the fall is important for children and adults alike. Remember when you were a
kid? Laughing with children in the neighborhood while you raked? Piling leafs into giant heaps and jumping in
them? Pure joy.

Here is a great list of tasks you can accomplish in the garden right now -

1. Cut back diseased foliage on perennials – be sure to throw away and do not compost.

2. Add compost or manure to garden beds to enrich them.

3. Clean bird feeders and get ready to use through the winter.

4. Cover water gardens with netting to keep leaves out.

5. Collect dried seed from flowers and veggies.

6. Dry the last of the flowers and seed heads for flower arranging.

7. Plant bulbs

8. Rake and compost leaves

9. Clean, sand and oil garden tools before storing them for the winter.

10. Wash, dry, and stack lawn and garden furniture

Truly, I’ll be reveling in the “sweater-weather” – you can count on me being out in the garden enjoying nature. I
hope to see you out there too.
